summer festival

A general term for various festivals celebrated in summer in Japan.

Festival-themed images are usually set at night, and may include such things as:

• characters wearing yukata (or rarely jinbei) and sometimes masks
• characters holding bagged fish, kinchaku, uchiwa, or water yoyos
• aerial fireworks
• food stands and a wide variety of food, including:
• candy apples
• chocolate bananas
• cotton candy
• dango
• ikayaki
• sausages
• shaved ice
• takoyaki
• yakisoba
• grilled corn
• paper lanterns
• goldfish scooping with poi
• yo-yo fishing
• katanuki
• shooting gallery
• ring toss
