northern ireland
A northeastern part of the isle of Ireland governed by the United Kingdom.
Historically, the region was separated from the rest of Ireland due to religious and political issues following the Irish independence from the UK in 1922, with the Protestant, or "loyalist" choosing to remain within the UK instead of joining the Catholic-majority "republican" Ireland. Conflicts between both sides, known as "the Troubles", ensued. Usually involved both sides attacking each other with paramilitary and terrorist attacks, which lasted until late 1998 when both sides agreed for a ceasefire.
