In Japanese cuisine, an extra-large paddle-shaped spoon used for stirring and serving rice and mixing vinegar into it. It may also be used to crush vegetables. Traditionally it is made out of non-metallic material such as bamboo, lacquerware or bare wood. Mass-produced plastic ones may be packaged with a rice cooker.
