Sega Corporation (株式会社セガ Kabushiki gaisha Sega), pronounced /ˈseɪɡə/ (US/Canada/UK/New Zealand/Australia) and usually styled as SEGA, is a Japanese multinational video game developer, publisher and hardware development company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, with various offices around the world.
The company started as the merger of two different coin-operated game machine companies made by Americans: Service Games created in Hawaii in 1940 and Rosen Enterprises founded in Japan in 1954. The name SEGA comes from SErvice GAmes.
Originally a maker of video game consoles, it later shifted into just creating and publishing video games for other game consoles. However, in 2019 the company published a miniature version of their popular Sega Mega Drive console with several built-in games included.
SEGA is the creator of the popular Sonic franchise.
Since 2013, it is the parent company of fellow publisher Atlus.
SEGA was also a major arcade operator and owned several iconic arcades in Japan. Due to declining income, especially caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic, in 2022 they completely sold off their arcade operations division to GENDA Inc. All remaining SEGA branded arcades to be rebranded with the "GiGO" logo (short for "Get into the Gaming Oasis").
