Pertaining to the former German Democratic Republic (in German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik).
After World War II, Germany was split into four occupation zones for the victorious Allied powers: the United States, United Kingdom, France and the Soviet Union. Differences between the western nations and the Soviet Union led to the long-term division of Germany with the creation of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic in 1949.
A hardline satellite nation of the Soviet Union, its communist controlled government ruled East Germany until anti-communism movements swept Eastern Europe in 1989 and the now-defunct DDR was reunited with the western half of Germany on 3 October 1990.
